Jamaat‑e‑Islami Plans Border Protests Amid Push‑In Allegations

Bangladesh’s Jamaat‑e‑Islami, along with its coalition of Islamist and opposition parties, has announced a series of protests along the India‑Bangladesh border over alleged “push‑ins” and the reported killing of Bangladeshi nationals near the frontier. The announcement, made by Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman, comes at a time when border tensions have become a major political talking point in Dhaka.

The 11‑party alliance, which includes the former anti‑Sheikh Hasina students‑led NCP, stated that rallies will be held in border districts and key crossing points on Friday, June 12, followed by a larger rally and procession in Dhaka on June 15. The alliance has also attacked Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s BNP government, accusing it of failing to protect citizens and alleging that India is attempting to force people across the border.

The issue of alleged push‑ins was reportedly raised by Dhaka during the latest Director General‑level talks between India’s Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh’s Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in New Delhi. The Jamaat alliance claims that Bangladeshi citizens have been killed in BSF firing, further fueling public anger.

These developments highlight the fragile nature of border relations between India and Bangladesh, where migration, security, and political rivalries often intersect. The planned protests underscore how domestic opposition groups are using border incidents to challenge the government while amplifying nationalist sentiment.
