Russia‑Ukraine War Surpasses World War I in Duration

The Russia‑Ukraine war has entered uncharted territory. As of June 2026, the conflict has lasted 1,569 days, surpassing the duration of World War I (1914–1918), which came to be known as the Great War. What began in February 2022 as a military operation that Moscow believed would topple Kyiv within days has instead evolved into Europe’s longest and bloodiest conflict since World War II.

Unlike World War I, which drew in multiple great powers across continents, the Russia‑Ukraine war remains primarily a two‑country confrontation. Yet the extensive use of modern military technology—drones, precision‑guided missiles, and electronic warfare systems—has made it one of the most technologically advanced wars in history. These tools have shaped the strategies of both President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, redefining the battlefield.

In 2022, the Kremlin expected a swift victory. Instead, the invasion has turned into a prolonged and costly confrontation, reshaping Europe’s security architecture and defying nearly every early prediction. Numerous attempts at mediation have failed to produce durable peace. Even U.S. President Donald Trump, who cast himself as a dealmaker, found the Ukraine crisis far more resistant to resolution than anticipated.

The war’s longevity underscores the depth of the geopolitical divide and the resilience of Ukraine’s defense. It also highlights the limits of diplomacy in the face of entrenched positions and the devastating human and economic toll of prolonged conflict.
