World’s Most Polluted Cities: Delhi Tops, Kolkata and Mumbai Among Top 10

The latest global air quality reports have once again placed Delhi at the top of the list of the world’s most polluted cities, with Kolkata and Mumbai also ranking among the top 10. South Asian cities continue to dominate the rankings, reflecting the severe environmental challenges faced by the region.

Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) regularly crosses into the “very unhealthy” category, driven by vehicular emissions, industrial activity, and seasonal smog. Kolkata, with its dense population and industrial zones, has seen PM2.5 levels rise sharply, while Mumbai’s rapid urbanization and construction dust have worsened its air quality.

The health implications are alarming: respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular risks, and reduced life expectancy are increasingly linked to prolonged exposure to toxic air. Economically, the burden of healthcare costs and lost productivity is immense.

Experts stress the urgent need for clean energy adoption, stricter emission controls, and sustainable urban planning. Without decisive action, India’s major cities risk long‑term damage to both public health and economic growth.
