Delhi–Siliguri Bullet Train Corridor Unveiled in Union Budget 2026‑27

India’s high‑speed rail ambitions took a major leap forward with the announcement of a new bullet train corridor linking Delhi to Siliguri, passing through key cities such as Lucknow, Varanasi, and Patna. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled the project on Saturday, highlighting its inclusion in the Union Budget 2026‑27 as part of the government’s broader push to expand modern rail infrastructure.

Once operational, the corridor is expected to transform travel times dramatically: passengers will be able to reach Varanasi from Delhi in just 3.5 hours, while the full journey to Siliguri will take only six to seven hours, compared with nearly 20 hours by conventional rail.

This project would become India’s second bullet train corridor, after the Mumbai–Ahmedabad line scheduled to begin operations next year. The Delhi–Siliguri route is strategically significant, connecting the national capital with the gateway to the Northeast, thereby boosting connectivity, tourism, and economic integration.

The announcement underscores India’s commitment to building world‑class transport infrastructure, positioning high‑speed rail as a catalyst for regional development and national growth.
