Shubman Gill Joins Elite Company With 11th Test Century

Indian captain Shubman Gill has etched his name into cricketing history by scoring his 11th Test century during the one‑off Test against Afghanistan at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. Gill reached the milestone on June 6, before being dismissed for 126 on the second day.

At just 26 years old, Gill has already compiled six centuries as captain in the longest format, less than a year after first leading India in Tests. His record as skipper is extraordinary: in only nine matches, he has amassed 1076 runs at an average of 82.76, including six centuries and one half‑century.

Gill’s innings was particularly special as it came in his home city, where he also crossed the 1000‑run mark as captain. In the 149‑year history of Test cricket, 101 captains have scored more than 1000 runs, but only Don Bradman boasts a better batting average than Gill’s. Remarkably, no other Test captain averages above 70, underscoring the rare company Gill now keeps.

This achievement not only highlights Gill’s consistency and leadership but also signals the dawn of a new era in Indian cricket. His ability to lead from the front with the bat places him among the finest captains in the game’s history, with the potential to set records that may remain unsurpassed for decades.
