Iran’s Direct Missile Strikes on Israel Threaten Fragile Ceasefire

Late Sunday, Iran launched multiple missile barrages at Israel, marking the first direct strike since the April ceasefire. The attacks, claimed by Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps, targeted Israel’s Ramat David Airbase and were described as retaliation for Israeli airstrikes in Beirut’s southern suburbs that killed two and injured twenty.

The strikes triggered air raid sirens across northern Israel, emergency restrictions nationwide, and temporary airspace closures in several regional countries. While Israeli authorities reported no immediate casualties or major damage, the incident threatens to unravel the fragile truce that had held since April.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry framed the operation as an act of “legitimate self‑defence” following Israeli actions in Lebanon and Iran. Senior Iranian commanders warned that any expansion of Israeli attacks could invite “more forceful and regret‑inducing blows.”

In Washington, US President Donald Trump urged restraint, publicly calling on both sides to avoid escalation. He emphasized that the missile attack should not derail ongoing diplomatic efforts, stating: “You’ve shot your missiles, that’s enough. Get back to the table and make a deal.” Trump claimed negotiations with Iran had been nearing an agreement before the latest exchange.

The episode underscores the volatility of the region: a single strike risks spiraling into wider conflict. For Israel, the challenge lies in balancing deterrence with restraint, while Iran seeks to project strength without inviting overwhelming retaliation. Whether diplomacy can prevail over military escalation remains uncertain, but the fragile ceasefire now hangs in the balance.
