FIFA World Cup 2026 Set for Historic Kickoff in Mexico City

The FIFA World Cup 2026, the biggest edition in the tournament’s history, is set to begin on June 11 with a clash between co‑hosts Mexico and South Africa at Mexico City’s iconic stadium. This year’s World Cup will feature 48 nations and 104 matches, making it the largest ever staged.

In a unique move, FIFA has planned three separate opening ceremonies across the host nations — Mexico, Canada, and the United States — reflecting the scale and inclusivity of the event. The first ceremony will take place in Mexico City on Thursday night, beginning around 11 PM IST, just 90 minutes before kickoff.

Global superstar Shakira will headline the performance, adding glamour and energy to the spectacle. The opening match between Mexico and South Africa will set the tone for a tournament that promises unprecedented excitement, diversity, and global engagement.

With expanded participation and a record number of matches, the 2026 World Cup is not only a sporting milestone but also a cultural celebration, uniting fans worldwide in anticipation of football’s grandest stage.
