Indian‑Origin Stars Shine at FIFA World Cup 2026

India’s long wait to see its men’s national team at the FIFA World Cup continues. Despite the absence of the tricolour among the 48 competing nations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the tournament will still carry familiar threads for Indian fans. Four players of Indian origin are set to feature, reflecting the diverse journeys of the Indian diaspora.

Sarpreet Singh (New Zealand) – Born in Auckland to Punjabi parents from Jalandhar, Singh has become one of New Zealand’s most recognizable footballers. His move to Bayern Munich in 2019 elevated his profile, and today he plays in Serbia while continuing to represent the All Whites with over 20 caps.

Tahsin Mohammed Jamshid (Qatar) – At just 19, Tahsin is one of Qatar’s emerging talents. With roots in Kerala, he developed through Qatar’s football system and now plays for Al Duhail. His international debut came in 2024, and he arrives at the World Cup as a promising winger.

Samuel Moutoussamy (DR Congo) – Born in France, Moutoussamy traces his ancestry to the Indo‑Guadeloupean Tamil community. Representing DR Congo since 2019, he has earned over 50 caps and is known for his composure and work rate in midfield. His story highlights the enduring cultural links of the Indian diaspora in the Caribbean.

Nishan Velupillay (Australia) – The Melbourne Victory winger, of Sri Lankan Tamil and Anglo‑Indian heritage, burst onto the scene in 2024 by scoring on his debut against China. With seven caps and three goals already, he is one of Australia’s most exciting attacking options heading into the tournament.

Together, these players embody the global reach of Indian heritage. While India itself is yet to make its World Cup debut, the presence of these stars ensures that millions of Indian fans will still find a connection to football’s biggest stage.
