In a significant diplomatic development, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that both the United States and Iran have agreed on the text of a peace deal, raising hopes of a breakthrough in one of the world’s most volatile regions.
Sharif, in a social media post, emphasized that despite “incessant misinformation campaigns,” Pakistan’s mediation has helped both sides reach a final agreed text. He declared, “Peace has never been this close as it is now.” The prime minister tagged US President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance Secretary Marco Rubio, as well as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, underscoring the seriousness of the announcement.
Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi echoed cautious optimism, noting that the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has never been closer” to finalisation. He urged restraint from speculation until details are formally released. President Trump shared Araghchi’s post, while Vice President Vance clarified that no funds or cash transfers were part of the deal simply for signing. Instead, economic benefits would accrue to Iran only if it fulfilled its obligations, particularly regarding nuclear weapons and regional stability.
The proposed arrangement reportedly includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and addressing Iran’s nuclear programme. Vance described the deal as one with the potential to “remake the region and lead to lasting peace,” while cautioning against reliance on unverified reports.
For Pakistan, this marks a major diplomatic achievement, positioning Islamabad as a credible mediator in global conflict resolution. Whether this agreed text translates into a signed and implemented peace accord remains uncertain, but the announcement signals the closest step yet toward ending years of hostility between Washington and Tehran.
