West Bengal Transfers Strategic Land in Siliguri Corridor to Centre

In a landmark decision, the newly formed BJP-led government in West Bengal under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has approved the transfer of 120 acres of land in the sensitive Siliguri corridor — popularly known as the “Chicken Neck” — to the Central Government. The move, announced during the Cabinet’s first meeting, is intended to strengthen India’s border security and address the long-standing issue of illegal infiltration.

The Chief Minister stated that the land will be handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) within 45 days, enabling the Ministry of Home Affairs to complete border fencing in the region. The Siliguri corridor is one of India’s most strategically vital stretches, connecting the mainland to the northeastern states. In some sections, the corridor narrows to just 20–22 kilometers, making it highly vulnerable during geopolitical or military tensions.

Bordering Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and lying close to China, the corridor is often described as India’s “security lifeline.” Security experts emphasize its importance for troop movement, logistics, and supply chains to the eight northeastern states. Strengthening infrastructure here is seen as critical to India’s defence preparedness.

While officials have not disclosed the exact purpose for which the land will be utilized, it is anticipated that it will host defence-related facilities, logistics hubs, and connectivity projects. The decision signals a strong intent by the state and central governments to secure one of India’s most sensitive regions and ensure uninterrupted mobility for defence operations.

This transfer marks a significant step in aligning state-level governance with national security priorities, reinforcing the strategic importance of the Siliguri corridor in India’s defence architecture.
