West Asia War Sparks Energy Crisis: Scarcity in Bangladesh and Pakistan

The escalating war in West Asia has begun to ripple far beyond the battlefield, triggering a global energy crisis that is forcing South Asian nations into emergency conservation measures. With oil and gas supplies disrupted and prices surging, governments in Bangladesh and Pakistan are scrambling to shield their fragile economies from the shock.

Bangladesh has taken the extraordinary step of shutting down all public and private universities, bringing forward Eid al‑Fitr holidays to reduce electricity demand. Officials argue that campuses consume vast amounts of power through residential halls, laboratories, and air conditioning systems. The closures are expected to ease pressure on the national grid while also reducing traffic congestion and fuel wastage. Yet the move underscores the severity of the crisis: a nation where 95 percent of energy needs are met through imports is now struggling to secure supplies.

The shortages have already forced four of Bangladesh’s five state‑run fertilizer factories to halt operations, with limited gas redirected to power plants to prevent blackouts. Panic buying of fuel has led to rationing, while the government scrambles to purchase liquefied natural gas (LNG) at sharply higher spot market prices.

In Pakistan, the government is preparing a national energy conservation plan reminiscent of COVID‑era restrictions. Proposals include work‑from‑home arrangements, online classes, virtual government meetings, and extended public holidays to cut consumption. The phased plan prioritizes essential sectors while cracking down on hoarding and smuggling of fuel.

Both countries face the same dilemma: balancing economic stability with energy security in the face of a war they cannot control. The crisis highlights the vulnerability of import‑dependent nations to geopolitical shocks. As the conflict in West Asia intensifies, South Asia’s austerity measures may only be the beginning of a broader struggle to keep the lights on.
