India & EU Unite on Energy Security Amid Iran-US War

A major development unfolded in Brussels as India and the European Union (EU) came together to address the global energy crisis triggered by the raging Iran-US conflict.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar joined the EU Foreign Affairs Council at the invitation of EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, marking the first high-level visit since India and the EU finalized their landmark Free Trade Agreement in January.

With the Strait of Hormuz—through which nearly 20% of global oil and LNG flows—virtually blocked by Iran, energy prices have surged worldwide. For India, which relies heavily on West Asian energy imports, this disruption poses a serious challenge.

During the talks, both sides emphasized the urgent need for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the crisis. Jaishankar also met European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and foreign ministers from Germany, Belgium, and other EU states. The discussions focused not only on energy security but also on deepening defence-industrial collaboration, maritime cooperation, and strengthening the India-EU Trade and Technology Council as a more outcome-driven forum.

The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that both India and the EU see growing convergence in maintaining a stable international order, strengthening multilateralism, and tackling global challenges—from West Asia to Ukraine and the Indo-Pacific.
