Diplomacy at the Strait of Hormuz: India’s Role in Securing Energy Flows

India’s management of the global oil and gas crisis has not only relied on diversification of suppliers and domestic production but also on diplomatic engagement to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. This narrow waterway, through which nearly a fifth of the world’s oil passes, is vital for India’s energy security. Any prolonged closure would have posed severe risks to households and industries across the country.

Recognizing this, New Delhi intensified its diplomatic outreach to both Gulf partners and Iran. While India continued to strengthen ties with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar to ensure steady shipments, it also engaged Iran directly. Despite the ongoing regional conflict, Iran’s willingness to allow energy consignments to pass through Hormuz has been a crucial gesture. By maintaining dialogue and emphasizing the importance of uninterrupted flows, India helped secure assurances that tankers carrying crude oil, LPG, and LNG would not be obstructed.

This diplomatic balancing act reflects India’s long-standing policy of maintaining constructive relations with all sides in West Asia. By appreciating Iran’s cooperative stance, India reinforced trust and demonstrated that energy diplomacy can transcend geopolitical rivalries. The gesture from Tehran not only stabilized India’s immediate supply lines but also signaled the importance of pragmatic engagement in times of crisis.

Alongside this, India diversified imports from countries such as the United States, Norway, Canada, and Russia, ensuring that even if disruptions intensified, households would remain protected. Yet, the continued flow through Hormuz—secured through diplomacy—remains central to India’s energy resilience.

In essence, India’s crisis management underscores that **energy security is not only about logistics and production but also about diplomacy and trust-building**. By appreciating Iran’s role and maintaining dialogue across the Gulf, India has safeguarded its supplies and strengthened its position as a responsible global actor.
