Tejas Mk2: Lighter, Stronger, Deadlier

India’s aerospace industry has reached a new milestone with the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) unveiling significant advancements in the Tejas Mk2 fighter programme. By reducing the aircraft’s structural weight by approximately 200 kilograms, engineers have made the jet more efficient, durable, and combat-ready.

The weight reduction was achieved through three key innovations: monolithic machining, jig-less assembly, and extensive use of carbon-fibre composites. Monolithic machining replaces multiple riveted components with single-piece titanium frames, eliminating hundreds of fasteners and saving around 120 kilograms. Jig-less assembly, aided by digital alignment tools, removes the need for heavy steel fixtures, reducing stress on the airframe and allowing further weight savings. Meanwhile, carbon-fibre composites now cover nearly 90 percent of the jet’s surface, offering superior strength-to-weight ratios and corrosion resistance.

These optimisations have allowed HAL and ADA to reinvest the saved weight into performance. The Tejas Mk2 now boasts an internal fuel capacity of over 3,300 kilograms, extending its combat range, and can carry up to 6,500 kilograms of payload across 11 hardpoints. This includes advanced indigenous weapons such as the Astra BVR missile, Rudram anti-radiation missile, and potentially the BrahMos-NG cruise missile.

Powered by the General Electric F414-INS6 engine delivering 98 kN of thrust, the redesigned fuselage and wing-root area enhance aerodynamics and agility. The Mk2 is positioned as a 4.5-generation medium-weight fighter, intended to replace India’s ageing Mirage-2000, Jaguar, and MiG-29 fleets.

Beyond its technical achievements, the Tejas Mk2 represents India’s growing capability to produce world-class fighter aircraft. By integrating cutting-edge manufacturing techniques, HAL and ADA are not only strengthening the Indian Air Force but also establishing India as a credible player in global aerospace innovation.
