Sarvam AI: India’s Sovereign Leap Beyond Silicon Valley

India’s AI landscape has long been overshadowed by developments in the United States and China. Yet Bengaluru-based startup Sarvam AI is rewriting that narrative with its ambitious push for “sovereign AI.” By building foundational models from scratch, Sarvam is positioning India not just as a consumer of global technology, but as a producer of cutting-edge innovation.

The company’s flagship tool, Sarvam Vision, has stunned the global AI community by outperforming giants like Google Gemini, ChatGPT, and Anthropic Claude in optical character recognition (OCR). On the olmOCR-Bench, Sarvam Vision achieved an accuracy score of 84.3 percent, surpassing Gemini 3 Pro and DeepSeek OCR v2, while ChatGPT lagged behind. Its performance on OmniDocBench v1.5 was equally impressive, scoring 93.28 percent overall, with particular strength in handling complex layouts, technical tables, and mathematical formulas—areas where traditional OCR systems often falter.

Sarvam’s rise is especially significant because it focuses on Indic languages, a domain largely neglected by global AI labs. Co-founder Pratyush Kumar and his team have demonstrated that India’s linguistic diversity can be a strength, not a limitation. Even skeptics like tech commentator Deedy Das have acknowledged Sarvam’s achievements, praising its OCR and speech models as both valuable and affordable.

Complementing Vision is Bulbul V3, Sarvam’s text-to-speech model designed for Indian languages. Supporting over 35 voices across 11 languages, with plans to expand to 22, Bulbul delivers natural, expressive, and production-ready audio. Entrepreneurs like Pratik Desai of KissanAI have already adopted it, citing its superior performance and cost-effectiveness compared to global competitors like ElevenLabs.

Sarvam AI’s success signals a turning point: India is no longer just a market for AI but a creator of sovereign models that reflect its unique needs. This achievement underscores the country’s potential to lead in AI innovation while empowering its own linguistic and cultural ecosystem.
