Russia Confirms First Flight of Su‑75 Checkmate, India Eyes Purchase

Russia has confirmed that its new fifth‑generation fighter jet, the Su‑75 Checkmate, is expected to make its maiden flight by the end of 2026. Designed as a replacement for the aging MiG‑29 fleet, the aircraft represents Moscow’s attempt to produce a modern, lightweight tactical fighter that combines stealth, advanced avionics, and affordability. The announcement marks a significant milestone in Russia’s defence industry, which has faced mounting challenges due to sanctions and the ongoing Ukraine conflict.  

The Su‑75 promises notable advancements over its predecessors. With a single‑engine design, the jet is expected to deliver improved speed, range, and radar evasion capabilities. It can carry anti‑radiation missiles and is equipped with sophisticated electronic warfare systems, making it suitable for both defensive and offensive missions. Russia has positioned the aircraft as an export‑oriented platform, targeting countries that seek advanced fighters without the prohibitive costs of heavier jets such as the Su‑57.  

India has emerged as a potential buyer. Long reliant on Russian aircraft, including the MiG‑29 and Su‑30MKI, New Delhi has been closely monitoring the Su‑75’s progress. While Russia has also offered India the Su‑57, reports suggest that the Checkmate’s lower cost and emphasis on stealth could make it an attractive option once the aircraft proves itself in flight tests. For India, which is seeking to modernize its air force amid regional security challenges, the Su‑75 could provide a balance between affordability and cutting‑edge technology.  

Nevertheless, the program faces hurdles. Funding constraints, industrial bottlenecks, and geopolitical pressures have delayed development. The success of the first flight will be crucial in determining whether Russia can overcome these obstacles and deliver a viable export product. For India, the decision will hinge on whether the Su‑75 can meet operational requirements and demonstrate reliability in real‑world conditions.  

In essence, the Su‑75 Checkmate embodies both Russia’s ambitions and India’s strategic calculations. Its first flight in 2026 will not only test Russian engineering but also shape the future of defence partnerships in a rapidly evolving global security landscape.
